Are you interested in studying a master’s degree with the support of a Telesport scholarship, like Douwe de Vries?

Former athlete Douwe de Vries is studying the Master in Sport Management at Johan Cruyff Institute with the support of a Telesport scholarship. The application period for scholarships for the academic year 2021-2022 is open until July 5

The Dutch newspaper Telesport will be offering two Telesport scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year: one for the Master in Coaching and one for the Master in Sport Management at Johan Cruyff Institute Amsterdam. The scholarships will be granted to two (former) elite athletes or coaches, in line with Johan Cruyff’s legacy, because, as he said: “Who better to serve the best interests of sport, than someone with the heart of an athlete?” The application period for a scholarship for the academic year 2021-2022 is now open to coaches and (former) athletes like Douwe de Vries, who would like to further their career in sport.

“I really wanted to continue to work in sport, to make use of my sport experiences and large network in the sports world I built up over the years as an athlete”

Douwe de Vries chose to apply for the Master in Sport Management at Johan Cruyff Institute Amsterdam, shortly after his sports career as a speed skater for the Jumbo-Visma Team ended. Five world titles in team pursuit, a bronze medal at the World Championship distances, and a national all-round title are some of Douwe’s achievements. “I really wanted to continue to work in sport after my speed skating career,” he says. “And also to make use of my sport experiences and large network in the sports world, I built up over the years as an athlete. I was looking for a study program that could give me the appropriate academic background and knowledge in the sports field. The Master in Sport Management of Johan Cruyff Institute was exactly the right fit for that.”

Study enriches work

Douwe is combining the Master in Sport Management with his work as a director for the Sven Kramer Academy, a non-profit organization that offers ice skating lessons and stimulates exercise, to contribute to the future of Dutch skating. “In my work, I have an opportunity to create plans, initiate projects and build a well-functioning team that gets things done in a pleasant and professional atmosphere. So, I can put my new knowledge from the Master in Sport Management into practice.”

“I find the experiences and knowledge from other sports very valuable”

“Before I started the study program, I already had experience as a leader in sport”, he continues. “But in the Master in Sport Management I am learning many new things. For example, I find the experiences and knowledge from other sports very valuable. In the module on finance I also gained extra knowledge, and I liked it much more than I expected I would! It helps me to improve in everything I do.”

“Telesport is very proud to support athletes like Douwe,” says Marcel van de Kraan, chief editor of Telesport. “It is exactly how Johan Cruyff would have wanted it, and it’s great to be able to continue that legacy.”
