“You can only coach others, if you know how to coach yourself” – Femke Dekker

Former rower Femke Dekker represented the Netherlands three times at the Olympic Games and in many international competitions in different rowing disciplines. Her biggest achievement in sports was winning the silver at Beijing 2008 with the Women’s eight.

“After 18 years in professional sports, I quit rowing and studied the Master in Coaching at Johan Cruyff Institute thanks to a scholarship provided by Aegon. After I graduated in 2013, I saw it was a terrific opportunity to delve into the discipline of coaching instead of focusing on sport tactics, which is what you mainly do as a team athlete.”

“The program also challenges you to look at yourself, focusing on personal growth and transfering your skills and knowledge to others”, she said, referring to Johan Cruyff’s opinion that you can only coach others, if you know how to coach yourself. “And this is something that’s very useful in my work with the Police Department”.
