Johan Cruyff Institute and Wellbeing Science Institute have jointly developed a unique and innovative program, ‘Leading with Self-Awareness’, which focuses on the mindset, attributes and skills needed to excel as leaders and role models in the sports industry and in business
The ‘Leading with Self-Awareness’ program aims to train professionals in the sports industry and business in leadership skills, mindset and personal wellness, thereby helping to create exceptional leaders and role models in the sports and business world. The program, which will start in February 2024, seeks to help participants develop the self-awareness and skills necessary to lead current and future organizations, where well-being through self-awareness plays a fundamental role in achieving maximum performance, both on a personal level and in teamwork.
“It is our aim to partner up with the best for the benefit of sport and society, just as Johan Cruyff did in his time,” says Mariël Koerhuis, general manager of Johan Cruyff Institute. Meanwhile, Steve Johnson, CEO of the Wellbeing Science Institute, says: “Helping people, organizations and communities to flourish is our mission. Partnering with a world-leading organization like Johan Cruyff Institute means together we can amplify that impact.” Johan Cruyff Institute contributes to the program its years of experience in sport management and leadership, while the Wellbeing Science Institute adds insights and methodologies rooted in wellness science and positive psychology.

‘Leading with Self-Awareness’ will be taught in English, from February to August 2024, in blended learning mode, and will consist of six modules. The program will kick off in Amsterdam with a first module that will lay the foundation for the program, providing a unique opportunity for participants to interact directly with instructors and fellow program participants at our Amsterdam campus. This will be followed by the next four online modules, which will combine self-paced, on-the-go assignments that will lead to a group coaching session.

As the program progresses, participants will have the opportunity to apply their new-found knowledge and skills in Module 6, again face-to-face, this time at our Barcelona campus, in an Olympic city that offers a dynamic and unique learning environment. This module will be the culmination of the program, offering a unique experience that includes an invited guest speaker who will bring valuable industry insights and perspectives. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned through group presentations, allowing them to demonstrate their personal growth and new leadership tools acquired during the program.
Alison Johnson, head of leadership and training at the Wellbeing Science Institute, stresses the importance of conscious and empathetic leaders in the industry: “Leaders who are aware of their own abilities build trust and establish collaborative relationships that help teams reach their full potential. Leadership requires people who are willing to listen, learn and adapt continuously, and these leaders will be role models for the next generation, promoting social causes and inclusion in sport and business.”

‘Leading with Self-Awareness’ has been designed for coaches, managers and leaders who understand the relevance of a new mindset, motivation and leadership skills in the future world of sport and business. Participants will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned during the program in the final face-to-face module in Barcelona, where they will also have the opportunity to share their knowledge through group presentations.
With this partnership, Johan Cruyff Institute and the Wellbeing Science Institute are setting a milestone in the sports industry by providing professionals with the necessary tools to lead with authenticity and promote collaboration, innovation and collective performance in the sport and business world of the future.
