The figure of Johan Cruyff will be remembered on September 21 at a unique event that will bring together, at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam, leading personalities from the world of sport and representatives of The World of Johan Cruyff network. The Cruyff Legacy Summit, which will be inaugurated by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, is organized by Johan Cruyff Institute and the Johan Cruyff Foundation to pay tribute to the life and work of its founder in the year in which Johan would have turned 75 and the Johan Cruyff Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary.
The social legacy of Johan Cruyff, the man who revolutionized the beautiful game and created an impact and a school his way of being, thinking, acting and transmitting in different spheres of society, has proven to be eternal. His imaginative mind, capable of seeing far beyond the purely obvious, his innovative character, always ahead of his time, his ability to seduce the masses on and off the field, and his mentality that led him to demonstrate that, by taking care of the details, anything is possible, continue to this day to be a source of inspiration for millions of people.
The Cruyff academic network offers 94 programs to educate athletes, sport and business professionals to become Leaders in Sport Management and consists of the Johan Cruyff Institute (executive education) with an office in Amsterdam and multiple offices and agencies worldwide and three sites of Johan Cruyff Academy (graduate education) and four sites of Johan Cruyff College (Vocational training) in the Netherlands
The Cruyff Legacy Summit will feature the participation of prominent personalities from the world of sport who saw and continue to recognize in Johan, not only a reference but also a role model for future generations. Most of the different sessions will be streamed live and will be inspired by Johan’s way of seeing sport and society, with special emphasis on three pillars on which the management of the sport of the future is projected: sustainability, leadership and inclusiveness.
The event will begin at 2 p.m. with an opening ceremony, which will be followed, from 2.25 p.m., by the first panel of the day, in which Sarina Wiegman, head coach of the English women’s national team who are the current European champions, and Arsène Wenger, head of Global Football Development at FIFA, will discuss leadership, team performance and role models in football.
Starting from 3.15 p.m., two different sessions will be held. Tanja Dik, CEO of the Johan Cruijff ArenA, will give a talk on sustainability from her experience as general manager of one of the most pioneering and innovative smart stadiums where, with the collaboration and commitment of international companies, they re-imagine the football and society of the future. Meanwhile, Paralympic athlete and alumna of the Johan Cruyff Academy, Marlou van Rhijn will speak about inclusivity in sport. The content of both sessions will be available on demand after the Summit.
Jordi Cruyff, Ronald Koeman and Frank Rijkaard will take the stage at 4.10 p.m. to discuss the concept of ‘total athlete development’. The three, from their own experience, will recall anecdotes and experiences from their days with Johan and their vision of him as a role model that remains the roadmap for leadership, team management and the development of sport, in its maximum expression, today and in the future.
The Cruyff Legacy Summit is supported by Sky Sports, as media partner; Air France and KLM, as official carriers; AVEX, as official supplier; Johan Cruijff ArenA, as official venue, and Holiday Inn-Arena Towers, as official hotel.
One legacy, multiple reasons to celebrate
Jordi Cruyff, technical director at FC Barcelona:
“Every time we see a new Cruyff Court open or new graduates receive their Johan Cruyff Institute diplomas, I feel very proud of my father and his legacy. Our duty as a family is to keep his legacy alive and this summit gives us the chance to show how grateful we are to everyone who helps us to do that.”
Carole Thate, general manager of The World of Johan Cruyff:
“Celebrating past achievements and one’s legacy isn’t just about looking back. According to Johan’s philosophy, it is also about looking ahead, creating and exploring new opportunities. It’s great to be part of this ongoing journey.”
Mariël Koerhuis, general manager of Johan Cruyff Institute:
“This summit allows our global Cruyff network of professionals, who make a difference in education, sport, business and society, to reunite and share their thoughts on future leadership for a sustainable sports world.”
Niels Meijer, director of the Johan Cruyff Foundation in The Netherlands:
“This International Summit highlights 25 years of creating space for children. It’s great to celebrate the social legacy with the World of Johan Cruyff because after all, Johan taught us that ‘you can’t do it alone, you have to do it together’.”
Pati Roura, director of the Johan Cruyff Foundation in Spain:
“Johan would be very happy to see how his social legacy, using sport as a tool for social transformation, is more alive than ever. I am proud to continue celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Foundation at such an event like the Cruyff Legacy Summit.”
