Gymnast van Gerner and water polo captain Genee start Masters thanks to Telesport scholarship

Telesport offers scholarships to Dagmar Genee and Celine van Gerner for, respectively, the Master in Sport Management and the Master in Coaching

On Monday, September 3, water polo international Dagmar Genee and Olympic gymnast Celine van Gerner started, respectively, the Master in Sport Management and the Master in Coaching at Johan Cruyff Institute in Amsterdam. Dagmar and Celine have been given the opportunity to study these Master programs thanks to the scholarships offered by Telesport. In this way, Telesport contributes to the mission of the Cruyff Institute to educate top athletes during or after their sports career for a social career in sport and to maintain their knowledge and qualities.

Jaap de Groot, Chief Sport at newspaper de Telegraaf, explains the motivation for the scholarships: “Over the last 10 years, we have been supporting students with scholarships that aim to raise sports organizations to a higher level. Experience has shown that athletes are suitable for these types of jobs because they have a high level of determination, combined with their own valuable sport experience. After completing the Master programs, they can instantly apply their acquired knowledge, because the studies are very practical and focused on sport. Just what the sports industry needs!”

Dagmar is the captain of the Dutch water polo team that won gold at the European Championships last July. The 29-year-old leader has studied before, but has now consciously chosen to study the Master in Sport Management. “I was looking for a new challenge to continue to develop myself on a professional level alongside my sport career. In the future, I would like to be involved in organizing sport events or projects and I am convinced that this program will offer me the opportunity to personally develop myself and give me a better insight into how the sports industry works. I hope that in the coming year I will gain insight into my strengths, but also into my weaknesses.”

Celine won the bronze medal in the team finals at the European Championships in Glasgow last month. Even though she is only 23 years old, she is already a regular face in the gymnastics world and is preparing for her future. “I want to coach people and children after my top sport career. The vision of Johan Cruyff was that you can only coach someone else if you know how to coach yourself. That’s what I think as well and I would like to transfer that. I hope that next year I will gain insight into who I am as a person, where my qualities lie and how I can apply them. And it would be nice if I could use these insights even in the last part of my elite sport career. Furthermore, I hope to learn a lot from my fellow students. Of course I know all about the side of being a top athlete, but what is it like to be on the other side of the sport?”

Both Dagmar and Celine will graduate in June 2019 if their studies go well.
